To most outsiders the idea of living underground sounds quite strange, but in Coober Pedy most residents live underground. In fact the motel, which has been carved from the rock, is the perfect refuge from the local climate. The mechanical equipment which digs out the rooms leaves attractive patterns in the red and white walls which are sealed to prevent dust and debris.

Coober Pedy is one of the most unique outback destinations in Australia, set in a stark arid landscape often compared to Mars. You may recognise the landscape from films that were made here including Mad Max and Wim Wenders’ epic Until the End of the World. This outback mining town, known as the opal capital of the world, enjoys a typical semi-desert climate. Apart from opal production, Coober Pedy is known for its unique style of underground living. Coober Pedy is a description of what the local Aborigines regarded as peculiar activities (both mining and living underground) and so the town means 'white men down holes'.

Things to see and do in Coober Pedy

Take a tour to the Moon Plain, 15 kilometres north-east of town, a vast expanse of rock unlike anywhere else on earth. Visit the Breakaways, 33 kilometres to the north set in a striking rocky landscape of flat-topped mesas. Further north again you can see the Painted Desert, an area of spectacular colourful hills. Try your luck at the Noodling Patch where tourists can "noodle" or search for opal pieces in the old mullock heaps right in town. There are many, often luxurious underground homes to explore in addition to underground shops, museums, art galleries and mines. Visit Shop Road, Churches, Opal Shops and Jewellers, the Didgeridoo Man, Crocodile Harry's Underground Nest and the Wildlife Park.

Unlike most other places in Coober Pedy, you don't need to go underground to see the town's 'big' attraction, the Big Winch. If you are up for a round of golf, check out the unique 18 hole golf course where there is not a blade of grass on the fairways and the greens are oiled sand. If visiting in August check out the Coober Pedy Races.
