Truffle Hunting

Truffle Hunt, Canberra ACT

Canberra Region

The Truffle Festival – Canberra Region is the ultimate foodie festival. Each year from June to August events are held across the region celebrating these highly prized gems. Participating venues offer a range opportunities to taste and experience the magic of the rare Black Winter Truffle. Indulge in the special flavours and aromas of truffle dishes at local restaurants and cafes. Join a hunt and see for yourself how the talented dogs unearth truffles. Learn from the chefs and other truffle experts at a cooking class or demonstration or pop along to a farmers market.

Turalla Truffles are located close to the town of Bungendore which is 30 minutes from Canberra near Lake George. Join Damian, his family and dogs for a Truffle hunt then cook experience in search of the wondrous Black Truffle. Be guided through the process of finding Truffles with the help of the dogs and then deciding on what is ready to harvest. Along the way you will be enlightened on the facts, and some of the magic of this amazing fungi.

Your hosts, Denzil and Anne Sturgiss offer a unique experience of a hands on truffle hunt during winter. Hunt with the harvesters and truffle dogs and “get down and get dirty” as you help excavate the black winter truffles from under the trees.

Truffle harvesting is essentially a winter activity as the cold kilojoules of the winter frosts are needed to fully mature the black winter truffle. The season runs from late May/ early June through to the end of August and sometimes into early September , subject to the prevailing weather conditions.

The programme for 2017 will be:

Weekend Hunts: Saturdays and Sundays June 3 and June 4 through to August 26 and 27. Your experience includes the truffle hunt, truffle tastings and an education session in The Truffle Shed. Start at 10.00am and finish around 1pm. This leaves time to further explore the Capital Region.

Cost: $80 per adult.
$20 per children aged 5 to 16.
Children under 5 free.

Bookings restricted to 24 per hunt.
Each harvester and dog will work with 12 people to ensure a more personal experience.

As an added attraction we have again teamed up with Foodish, the Cooking School and function venue at the Belconnen Markets, to offer you the Full Truffle experience–a truffle hunt, followed by a hands-on cooking class in the Foodish Kitchen and a delicious four-course lunch with paired wines for $195 per person, including the hunt. If you’re interested in more than just the hunt, see the Full Truffle, where you can book a spot.

After the hunt we come down to the cleaning and grading room at  the house and talk about the industry in Australia and have a warm cup of something (usually soup) with truffle and some other simple tastings. It is not a meal, but a chance to see the processes involved in preparing truffles for market, to get some idea of truffle aroma and taste and ideas for use of truffle in your own cooking.  If you wish, you can buy truffle after the hunt – depending on what is harvested that day and what restaurant orders we have outstanding.  An informative and enjoyable day.
